Big ticks only at the tens, why the hell are small ticks at the twos? Since when is it ever relevant to know if you’re going an even speed? Half of all speed limits end in a friggin five, that shouldn’t be between the goddamn ticks. Also 0-10 is half the spread of 10-20 for some reason.

I always thought the C5 and C6 Corvette speedos were excellent:

I really like how the graduations from 0-100 are spaced out for better readability at normal highway speeds, and 100-200 are squeezed together for still-adequate readability but less space taken up in the dial that, let’s be honest, is very rarely used (and when it is, the driver is usually focused more on the road and the tach than the speedo anyway).

Subaru did this on most models of the SJ Forester (‘14-’18) except for the upper trim levels of the facelift version.  Those went back to an every 5mph marking.

People are quite capable of accurately splitting two marks. Its the basis of most firearm iron sight systems. (At least until peep or ghost ring sights came into vogue). I don’t have much trouble figuring out 55, 65, 75, etc on my Toyota. 2 mph gradations on the even numbers are close enough for government work. Certainly better than marking the evens.

It us ed to be pretty common for the 0-10 graduation to be smaller: I thi nk it’s bec au se mechanical speedos didn’t work well at very low speeds. For example 1996 Mustang:

Hot take: Any speedometer that shows over 85 is a bad speedometer.

No reason to show speeds way over the legal limit. Having the gauge go higher just make people want to use the rest of the gauge.

The one pictured above isn’t so bad but some go up to 140-160! Why? Then 0-60, which is actually important are only 1/3 of the gauge.   The numbers could be so much farther apart.

I know, I know. 1% of the population take their cars to race tracks where you can go faster than 85, that’s true, but also if you needed to put an aftermarket speedo on your Miata to track it would that be the end of the world?
